The new Half Price Books location at 201 Northwest Loop 410 in San Antonio, Texas, showcases how natural wood can bring warmth, texture, and architectural interest to a modern retail exterior. Featuring a distinctive geometric façade made with Accoya wood supplied by Mason’s Mill & Lumber, the project combines thoughtful design with materials selected for their appearance and long term performance.
Designed by Open Studio Architecture and constructed by Steel Roots Construction, the retail development features a series of rectangular sections with alternating horizontal and vertical Accoya wood slats. The repeating pattern creates depth and visual movement across the upper portion of the building, while the natural wood tones complement the olive green framing and bold red Half Price Books signage.
The result is a welcoming commercial exterior that gives the bookstore a distinctive architectural presence while maintaining a cohesive appearance across the surrounding retail spaces.
Open Studio Architecture, based in San Antonio, Texas, developed a façade design that uses repetition, contrast, and material variation to create a consistent architectural style across the retail development.
Rather than relying on traditional continuous wood cladding, the design incorporates individual rectangular sections filled with Accoya slats arranged in alternating directions. This approach gives the Half Price Books storefront and surrounding retail spaces a distinctive appearance while creating visual interest from multiple viewing angles.
Steel Roots Construction, based in Katy, Texas, brought the design to life, coordinating the construction and execution of the exterior façade. The alternating wood orientations, consistent spacing, and surrounding framing all contribute to the finished appearance.
Mason’s Mill & Lumber supplied the Accoya materials for both the horizontal and vertical slats, with sales representative Alex Flores supporting the project team’s material needs.
For commercial architectural applications like the Half Price Books development, material selection plays an important role in achieving both visual appeal and long term durability. Accoya is a high performance modified wood known for its dimensional stability, durability, and versatility in exterior environments.
Through a process called acetylation, Accoya’s wood structure is modified to reduce its ability to absorb moisture. This helps minimize swelling, shrinking, and movement caused by changing environmental conditions, making it well suited for exterior architectural applications.
For this San Antonio project, Accoya offered several benefits:
Dimensional Stability: Accoya’s reduced swelling and shrinking help support the consistent appearance of the horizontal and vertical slat arrangements.
Durability: Its resistance to rot and decay makes it a dependable choice for exterior wood applications exposed to changing weather conditions.
Architectural Versatility: Accoya can be milled into a variety of profiles and dimensions, allowing architects to explore creative exterior designs.
Natural Wood Appearance: The visible wood grain and natural texture bring warmth to the building’s modern architectural elements.
Sustainability: Accoya is made from responsibly sourced wood and is designed for an extended service life, supporting environmentally conscious material selection.
With San Antonio’s combination of heat, humidity, and seasonal weather changes, selecting a stable and durable exterior wood product is especially important.
Accoya provided the project team with the flexibility to create the building’s geometric wood façade while offering the performance characteristics needed for a commercial exterior.
The completed Half Price Books exterior demonstrates how thoughtful architectural detailing can turn a functional building element into a defining design feature.
Across the upper portion of the retail development, alternating horizontal and vertical Accoya slats create a repeating geometric pattern. Each rectangular section is surrounded by olive green framing, giving the façade a consistent layout while allowing the individual wood arrangements to stand out.
The horizontal slats create strong linear patterns, while the vertical sections introduce height and openness. Together, they add dimension and visual rhythm to the building’s exterior. The natural wood tones contrast with the surrounding framing and the recognizable red Half Price Books signage, creating a storefront that feels both contemporary and inviting.
From a distance, the repeating sections create a unified appearance across the retail spaces. Up close, the individual Accoya slats, wood grain, and spacing reveal the details that make the design unique.
The finished façade is a great example of how Accoya can be used beyond traditional siding and cladding applications, offering architects and builders additional flexibility when designing commercial exteriors.
The project team is already planning another application using a similar approach in early 2027. The positive outcome of this project has created another opportunity to incorporate Accoya into a commercial architectural design.
The Half Price Books development in San Antonio highlights what can be achieved when thoughtful architectural design, experienced construction teams, and the right materials come together.
Mason’s Mill & Lumber is proud to have supplied the Accoya used throughout the building’s distinctive façade and to have supported Open Studio Architecture and Steel Roots Construction in bringing the project to completion.
